A student of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Ikot Akpaden, has been suspended “indefinitely” from the school for allegedly calling the university vice chancellor ‘foolish’ on Facebook. The student, Joy Nkanang, was in her second year in the department of performing arts before her suspension on May 9. Ms Nkanang, from Akwa Ibom State, on May 5 made the following post on Facebook: “AKSU what is happening? A dry cleaners shop was robbed last night along college road….” Ms Nkanang’s Facebook post, PREMIUM TIMES learnt, was about the increase in cult activities and insecurity around the university campus. Tom Awhana, the former Head of Chambers for the Law Office of Mr. Mogbeyi Sagay, a late Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) was on arraigned on Friday at an Ikeja Special Offences Court for stealing N188.7 million belonging to the law firm of the late senior lawyer. Awhana was arraigned alongside Paul Okoro a former lawyer in the law firm who is also accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of stealing N3.6million from the firm. Awhana and Okoro pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of conspiracy to steal. Okoro denied the charge of stealing while Awhana pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge of stealing. According to the EFCC, Awhana was the Head of Chambers of the law firm of Mogbeyi Sagay and Co. from 2010 to 2018. Sagay his Principal, died in 2012. He was made signatory to the law firm’s Zenith Bank Account alongside three administrators of the late SAN’s estate. The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has set aside the judgment of the Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal which nullified the victory of Governor Gboyega Oyetola. Delivering the lead judgement on Thursday, Justice Hannatu Sankey set aside the entire proceedings of the Tribunal because of its “faulty composition”. The judgment of the appellate court was upheld by four justices of the five-man panel. Speaking in a chat with Punch shortly after the judgment, the state party chairman, Soji Adagunodo, said “Technicality was what Wole Olanipekun laid before the court. There was no argument about the decision of the Tribunal that gave us victory. We will upturn the judgement at the Supreme Court. It is democracy at play. We will study the Appeal Court judgment appropriately and challenge it at the supreme court,” Adagunodo said. More to follow…

The Minister of Labor, Chris Ngige, who gave the assurance in a statement on Monday, February 26,  added that implementation of the new pay would take effect immediately after the announcement.  He added that the government is already receiving memorandum from relevant bodies and persons to enable the determination of the new minimum wage.
